Regional Winter Training for Masters – by Jurgen Schuber, Barrie Rowing ClubThursday evenings from 6-8pm and Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6:30am – 8:30am
Masters rowing in Canada is an ever growing group, these athletes are over the age of 27 and are looking to continue rowing and competing at a provincial, national, or international level. As a masters rower, our abilities, goals, commitment and training falls in a variety of levels, although our hearts have two common themes, one that we love rowing, and two that we enjoy being social with other rowers who are equally passionate. The winter is about to descend on us so it’s time to make those dry-land training schedules and commitments. Through a joint effort between several of the North Central Region Clubs we would like to offer all masters who are interested in training with other like minded masters, a facility and program that will keep you motivated and interested all winter. Our home site is the Barrie Rowing Club, that will be our erg training facility, as well as a jump off site for other cross training activities such as snow shoeing and skiing. The BRC is a heated boathouse that will soon house 14 ergs, matted stretching area, showers and change rooms, and Free Yoga!. For insurance, facility and management costs we require all attending masters whom are not current members of the BRC, to register with the BRC as a Winter Training Member. This is a $50 package which will be required with signed liability form before any activities are done within the club. This is an exciting opportunity for our area, we hope that this will be the ramp up to a combined effort in competing at the Masters Worlds in St Catharines next summer. There is also work being done to develop a U23, U19, U17 program for competitive athletes to train and compete in more competitive, larger boats with athletes from other clubs in the region, all under one united club banner.
Please join us Thursday evenings from 6-8pm and Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6:30am – 8:30am. As a note we offer free Yoga at the club Thursdays from 7:15 – 8:15 so get the erging done and join the yoga class. When the snow flies we will be heading out for alternate activities or coffee after the Weekend Morning Practices. Jim Esmonde is also offering a FREE circuit style training class immediately after the Saturday erging session; this will also be available to any who are interested. We are all looking forward to seeing a lot of excited and eager masters this winter. Jurgen Schubert (705) 818-0954 Barrie Rowing Club Head Coach
